The Key to the Heart – a moment of play, hope and connection

Terry Laakso's Key to the Heart tells the story of two characters who meet in a gentle landscape. A happily dancing zebra holds out a golden key towards a heart balloon floating in the air – as if trying to unlock something invisible but important. A rabbit sitting low on the grass holds a red heart in its hands and looks at the zebra curiously, as if asking: "Is this what you're looking for?"

The green and blue of the background slide into each other like day and night, and the atmosphere of the work is at once playful, symbolic and touching. The human gestures of the characters and the surreal setting invite the viewer to interpret – perhaps the meaning of love, perhaps friendship, perhaps a dream.
